Proposed wind turbine generates continued review

By Terry Date, Swampscott Patch, swampscott.patch.com 22 September 2011

The town energy committee will continue its review of the Middle School turbine tonight. On hand will be a representative of the firm hired to study the project’s feasibility.

The Renewable Energy Committee will take public input tonight on a proposed 900 kw wind turbine near the Middle School.

Jonathan Markey of Meridian Associates – the company hired to study the turbine’s feasibility for the site behind the Forest Avenue ballfieds – will be at the meeting to answer questions, said Victoria Masone, assistant town engineer.

The meeting is at 7 pm in the selectmen’s room at Town Hall.

Markey reported earlier in a draft of the turbine study that the site was viable.

There was enough wind, demand for energy and financing for it.

The committee has taken public comments at meetings in July and August.

Opponents’ worries include noise concerns, Masone said.

The town received a $75,000 grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center for the feasibility study.

Once completed, the final report will be forwarded to the town and the Clean Energy Center.

Public input will be incorporated into the report.

Ultimately, the town energy committee will present a recommendation to selectmen, hopefully before the holidays, Masone said.

Selectmen have the final say on whether the turbine gets built.
