Concerned citizens discuss lake wind turbines

A proposal to construct power generating wind turbines on Lake Ontario has drawn opposition along the shoreline.

A group called Great Lakes Concerned Citizens gathered at Ontario Beach Park to talk about the economic and environmental issues of wind farms on the lake.

“Loss of the lake to boating. It would rope off at least 25 square miles in this area if the project is done the way it’s proposed. It would be prohibited for boating and fishing. It would disrupt a lot of environmental things in this area and it would affect property values in a negative way,” said Mary Isselhard of Great Lakes Concerned Citizens.

The Irondequoit Town Board has already passed a resolution to oppose wind turbines in Lake Ontario.

The Buffalo News last week cited state Senator George Maziarz as saying he did not believe the New York Power Authority was moving forward with a project to put turbines in either Lake Erie or Lake Ontario.
