Monitoring mast scheme ‘will open way to more wind farms’

Plans to build a 70m mast near St Neots will open the way for more wind farms to “hammer” villages in the area, say campaigners.
A planning application for a wind monitoring mast north-west of Church Farm in Rectory Lane, Southoe, was submitted to Huntingdonshire District Council by TCI Renewables.
The mast, which determines an area’s suitability for wind farm construction, would stand for a maximum of three years.
Danny Maher, TCI’s project manager, said: “We are confident an application for a wind farm can be submitted early next year and will eventually provide electricity to thousands of homes.”
Anti-wind farm campaigner Bev Gray, said: “In the next few months to a year, I would expect a full planning application for a wind farm to be submitted.
“Residents around Hail Weston, Southoe, Little Paxton and Perry are all going to be hammered and this just adds to the ever-growing list of wind farm projects which are being proposed in this area.
“Originally, masts were about 30 metres but they are getting much bigger to tap into stronger wind currents.”
