Film exploring wind development debate to be shown in Westfield

WESTFIELD, N.Y. – Chautauqua County Citizens for Responsible Wind Power will host a free public showing of the documentary film “Windfall” today.

The film examines the divisive debate about industrial wind power development in Meredith, N.Y., near Albany, where an Irish energy company proposes building a 40-turbine wind farm.

Some Meredith residents welcome the development of a new green energy system and the additional income that the energy company would pay to build and operate turbines on their land, according to the film’s website, at www.windfallthemovie.com.

Others believe that wind power is not practical in the region and that industrial wind farms pose a significant threat to the environment and quality of life.

The film provides a balanced view of those and other issues related to industrial wind power, said Paul Coran, of Chautauqua County Citizens for Responsible Wind Power.

“It presents the pros and cons of the issue, all of which need to be considered,” Coran said. “We need to give consideration to all concerns and merit all opinions to decide what’s in the best interest of everyone involved.”

Wind energy developers have proposed industrial-scale wind projects similar to the Meredith project in North East, offshore along the Erie and Ashtabula county Lake Erie coastlines, and in Chautauqua County.
