Heysham residents dismayed by turbine scheme

Heysham residents have been dismayed to learn that a controversial 110m-high wind turbine scheme just half a mile from homes is back on the agenda.

The giant windmill-like structure, mooted for land near Fanny House Farm on Oxcliffe Road, has been backed by council planners just two years after original proposals for two turbines were thrown out. But after developers British Telecom reduced their plans to just one turbine, the Ministry of Defence has withdrawn objections.

The MoD had been worried two 110m turbines would interfere with radar tracking of aircraft from Warton near Preston. BT has also moved the planned site 380m further away from houses than the original scheme.

Protests are expected when Lancaster City Council’s planning committee meets to make a final decision next Monday (September 19).

Thirty-seven letters from angry residents objecting to the turbines have been sent to the council, compared to three in favour.

David Morris MP has also slated the scheme, having backed a bill currently going through the House of Lords to build turbines well away from homes.

“I think BT is trying to sneak through this proposal before the bill is passed,” said a woman who lives on Ashcroft in Heysham.

“It’s too close to my house and I have reservations about the noise the turbines will make. This will be a blight on the landscape.”
