Permission to be refused for Lacken windfarm

Western People, www.westernpeople.com 14 September 2011

Local councillors want Mayo Co Council to further explore development proposals for a windfarm at Carrowmore Lacken.

At a meeting of the local electoral area committee in Ballina, councillors were advised that the proposed four- turbine wind-farm and associated works was being denied planning permission.

The council’s planning department said the project would have a disproportionate effect on the existing or future character of the landscape in terms of design and visual prominence, would contravene various policies adopted by Mayo Co Council in relation to such developments and would consequently be contrary to proper planning and sustainable development of the area.

Noting that there were a number of submisions on the planning file from members of the public, Cllr Jarlath Munnelly wondered if anything could be done to allay the concerns expressed.

Cllr Munnelly and Cllr Eddie Staunton noted that a lot of time and initiative had been invested in the development proposal and argued that it deserved to be fully thrashed out by the councillors and planners.

Pointing out that Mayo Co Council has adopted its own renewable energy strategy, Cllr Gerry Ginty also urged that the planned development by given further consideration in light of the benefits that might be accrued from it.

Committee Cathaoirleach, Cllr Seamus Weir, said the council should define its position in relation to windfarm developments more clearly.

A final decision on the proposed development is not due until November 9 next.
