Rural district earmarked for more giant wind turbines

East Yorkshire faces the prospect of yet another wind farm after an application to build nine turbines was lodged with East Riding Council.

Thornholme Field would be built on agricultural land around 1km north of Thornholme, 2km north east of Burton Agnes and 6km south west of Bridlington.

Six of the turbines would measure 110m to the tip, three, 100m.

Developers Wind Prospect built the first wind farm in the East Riding at Out Newton.

The developers say the farm would generate enough electricity for more than 10,000 homes, although the figures are heavily qualified by the intermittent nature of the power source. The nearest house is just under 1km away.

Catherine Taggart, from Wind Prospect, said: “It is widely recognised that we cannot continue to rely on oil in the same way as we have done for so many years.

“Onshore wind energy is a mature, clean technology which is making a tangible and crucial contribution to European and UK Government renewable energy targets.”

The developers said they were encouraged by the level of support they had had so far. A decision could be made by East Riding Council by the end of the year.

If approved, construction of the wind farm could start in 2012 and would take around nine to 12 months to complete.

There is an EU-wide target to generate 20 per cent of total energy from renewable sources by 2020. The UK’s target is to generate 15 per cent from renewables by 2020. The UK has the largest percentage increase to make of all EU countries to meet its target.
