Start of work on Palgrave’s controversial wind turbine

Residents living in a north Suffolk village are contemplating leaving after work on a controversial wind turbine got under way.

The 24-metre-tall construction on land belonging to Palgrave and District Community Centre has divided opinion in the village since the plan was revealed two years ago.

And with the turbine set to be up and running by the end of September, parish councillor John Sparks says that not enough dialogue went on between the applicants and those in the village who opposed the plan.

He said: “It’s all well and good the community centre committee saying it’s no problem, but it is a problem, as there is now bad blood in the village, community spirit has been damaged, and those in proximity to the turbine have discussed leaving Palgrave as a result.”

But John Kilgallon, of the community centre council, argued: “Some houses around the area have been up for sale a while now anyway, as there are difficulties to be had selling property everywhere.

“You have got to bear in mind that everything we spend we have to raise, and we have looked at all the alternatives, but they weren’t viable.

“When the turbine’s up, vast amounts of people will say ‘what was all the fuss about?’”

Located near the playing fields off Upper Rose Lane, the £50,000 turbine will slash £2,500 from the 25-year-old centre’s fuel bills, and generate about £6,000 a year through a green energy government tariff.
