County to consider land request related to substation

The Mason County Board of Commissioners is expected to consider the partial termination of farmland development rights for property where Consumers Energy is proposing a substation for its possible wind farm in Riverton and Summit townships.

In a letter dated July 27 from Consumers Energy to County Clerk Jim Riffle, the company explains it has optioned a parcel of property in section 7 of Summit Township for the proposed installation of an electric substation. The parcel is located on Pere Marquette Highway between Kistler Road and West Hawley Road and is part of a larger property that is part of the Farmland Development Rights Program.

The property is owned by Daryl and Susan Peterson and the county board has received a request from them to have this parcel released from a Farmland Development Rights Agreement.

“Since their (Consumers Energy’s) use is not going to be farm use, it has to go through the process of being removed from the PA 116 program,” Mason County Administrator Fabian Knizacky said.

“Part of the process is the county board making a decision whether they support it being removed from PA 116,” he said.

Knizacky said the PA 116 program is where farmers agree to keep their property for farm use and then the State of Michigan gives them a credit.

The county board meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the commissioners room at the Mason County Courthouse.

The board is also expected to certify requests of levies for several millages. Among the requests for levies are:

• a 0.003 mill request for 2011 for the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Commission.

• a 0.58 mill request for 2011 for the Mason County Jail.

• a 0.9646 mill request for the 2011 for Oakview Medical Care Facility.
