A fundraising wine tasting and tapas evening has this week helped raise £2,100 for the campaign to halt wind turbines from being erected in Rooksbridge, near Burnham-On-Sea.

The event at Wedmore Golf Course on September 3 was organised in aid of the NoPilrow campaign by Louise Allen from Mark and Nickie Collins from East Brent.

Nick Woolmington, Chairman of NoPilrow, said: “The wine tasting and tapas evening was a sell-out and great fun – thanks to everyone who attended and organised it.”

“The £2,100 raised will ensure we are able to continue our fight against the planned wind farm development.”

During the event, people tasted a selection of wines and enjoyed a five course tapas menu. There was also an auction and a raffle during the evening, which raised £1,000 for the campaign.

Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt has pledged her support to the campaign and also attended.

Nick added: “We are opposing the proposed building of the six turbines at Pilrow near Rooksbridge. We’re not against wind power at all but we feel these developments ought to be sited either offshore or in more appropriate areas that are not so close to homes onshore.”

The group, which now has more than 300 supporters, was officially formed in July to fight proposals by Broadview Energy to build the 140m turbines on farmland at Pilrow, south of Rooksbridge.

The campaign’s next fundraising event is a pub quiz at the Wellington Arms in Rooksbridge on Saturday, September 17th at 7pm. The event is open to teams of four and families are welcome to enter. The cost per team is £10 including nibbles. To register a team, call organiser Roger Griffin on 01934 750810.
