Roads spared wind farm traffic

By Christopher Michel, Olean Times Herald, www.oleantimesherald.com 1 September 2011

OLEAN – The busiest street in Olean will not be used by the expected 8,000 delivery trucks bringing construction materials to the 29-turbine wind farm in Allegany.

After the Allegany Town Board approved the wind farm in a 4-1 vote Monday evening, Dan Spitzer, the town’s consulting attorney, said the city roads would not be used for the project. That means travel along North Union Street is expected to remain undisturbed by the wind farm’s construction. Instead, Mr. Spitzer said EverPower Wind Holdings Inc. – the energy company building the farm – is planning to use a delivery route through the town of Carrollton.

EverPower officials confirmed in two letters sent to city officials that the company has no plans to direct delivery traffic through Olean.

“Basically, (EverPower) told us they are not planning on using our roads for the project,” Mayor Linda Witte said. “They also told us that information will be in their report on the project.

“But we’re still waiting to see that report … and I want to see it in writing.”

Mayor Witte said she plans to contact both EverPower and Allegany town officials for a copy of the report.
