Council applauds wind farm rules rethink

ABC News, www.abc.net.au 30 August 2011

A western Victorian shire says the State Government’s changes to wind farm planning rules represent a win for regional communities.

The changes, announced yesterday, will allow residents to veto turbines near their homes and will stop wind farms from being built close to 21 major regional towns.

Moorabool Shire Mayor Pat Griffin says his council adopted a two kilometre set-back rule for wind farms more than two years ago.

He says the Government’s policy reflects the concern of councils across Victoria.

“Us and other shires have been having long-term discussions with the Minister about this and we are really pleased that he has taken this on board and we’ve been listened to,” he said.
