Massachusetts turbine foes unite in new effort

BRIMFIELD – Members of No Brimfield Wind vehemently opposed a proposal by First Wind, of Boston, to build 10 wind turbines on West Mountain.

After that proposal was dropped in March, many of them have turned their attention to challenging proposed wind-related projects and legislation throughout the state.

Virginia Irvine, who helped organize No Brimfield Wind, joined many of her fellow advocates in becoming members of Wind Wise Massachusetts, an alliance of regional groups in Massachusetts that oppose the Wind Energy Siting Reform Act.

One of the most recent actions taken by the group was asking the state Department of Environmental Protection and the state Department of Public Health to place a moratorium on the construction of industrial wind turbines due to reports that they cause negative health impacts. Headaches produced by the noise of wind turbines are among the most commonly reported health problems, but Irvine said other issues have also been described with increasing regularity.

“We are particularly concerned with what is happening in Falmouth as a result of the wind turbines there,” Irvine said. “People have experienced raised blood pressure, sleep disturbances, nausea, and several other health effects. Some people even had to move away.”
