Attappadi package may be scrapped

Express News Service , The New Indian Express, ibnlive.in.com 27 August 2011

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan failed to provide a clear answer on whether the tribals of Attappady would be restored their rightful land, Oommen Chandy on Friday said the ‘Attappadi package’ itself would be scrapped if there was opposition to it. Talking to reporters here after a Special Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said the ownership of the land would remain with the tribals. The company will only be a lessee, Chandy said.
The tribals will be entitled to five percent of the revenue from power generation, the Chief Minister said. There will be a specific clause mentioning the five percent in a proposed wind energy policy planned by the KSEB, he said. On Thursday, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was non-committal on whether the tribals would be restored the land if it was proved that Suzlon Energy Ltd had indeed encroached upon their land.
