Vermont wind protest planned

Groups opposing the Lowell wind project and other large-scale wind projects in Vermont plan a series of protests Wednesday.

Dubbing their rallies, ”Do More Solar, Not Big Wind,” the protesters plan to take their case to the governor’s office, the Department of Public Service and Green Mountain Power Corp.

GMP plans to build 21 turbines atop Lowell Mountain, a project opponents say will harm waterways and wildlife. The company is awaiting final approval from the state Public Service Board after obtaining several state permits last week.

Rallies will take place at 11 a.m. in Montpelier on the Statehouse lawn and at 2 p.m. Green Mountain Power Corp. headquarters in Colchester.

Organizers said participants will be traveling by buses and car pool from communities across the state facing large-scale wind development including: Lowell, Craftsbury, Albany, Eden, Irasburg, Rutland, West Rutland, Ira, Waitsfield, Milton and more.

They plan to deliver a letter to the governor’s office and GMP officials asking them to reconsider their support for the Lowell wind project, and deliver comments to the Department of Public Service on the Comprehensive Energy Plan urging the state to support smaller-scale renewable energy solutions.
