Fight for right with might!

News & Star, www.newsandstar.co.uk 20 August 2011

The scenario isn’t one you could easily make up without the aid of wild imagination.

Wind turbines near Longtown would generate so much seismic noise at Eskdalemuir – some 20 miles away – the Ministry of Defence’s international nuclear weapons monitoring operations would be compromised.

It was a dire warning that held fast with council planners.

The caution, along with local objections to a blight on the skyline, harmful effects on tourism and risk to the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage site, was enough for them to throw out plans for a wind farm of turbines three times the size of Carlisle Civic Centre.

Nearly 300 people had objected to plans from EDF Renewables for six turbines on Hallburn farm, near Longtown. EDF have threatened to appeal rejection of their proposals – which has implications of cost for the local authority.

This is always the concern when wind farms are mooted by developers to whom money is no object – but winning is.

A clean fight of equal balance is impossible. Resources are never equal. So, when objectors can claim victory in their resistance of big business, they must cross their fingers against another fight.

But the MoD weighing in with warnings amounting to supposedly clean, green, efficient and friendly wind farms threatening national and global security?

That might just clinch it.
