Planners seek clarification on Charlestown wind turbine

Western People, www.westernpeople.ie 17 August 2011

Planners were unable to decide on an electricity generating wind turbine proposed for the town and have sought further information on the development, writes Marian Harrison.

Wind Energy Direct sought planning permission to construct the turbine with a height of up to 85 metres at Brackloonagh South in June.

Planners were due to announce a decision this week but instead have wrote to the applicant seeking further information.

They want six points of information clarified, including a licensed pre-development testing and licensed archaeological excavation. The applicant has six months to submit the information sought.

An advice note on the bottom of the letter sent to Wind Energy Direct outlined that the council had “serious concerns in relation to the scale/height of the proposed development compared to other developments in the area”.

The proximity of the proposal to inhabited dwelling houses is also an issue.

“The applicant was advised at pre-planning that it would be prudent to adhere to the 500m rule,” read the letter.
