Activists protest wind power plan

Rockland – A local environmental activist took his opposition to a deep water ocean energy project to the streets of Rockland.

Ron Huber banged on a drum beside signs expressing opposition to the proposal that includes a pilot project off Monhegan Island.

Huber timed his protest – Thursday evening, Aug. 11 – with the airing of a movie on wind power.

The Island Institute presented “On the Horizon,” billed as an in-depth look at the potential for offshore wind-energy development in the Gulf of Maine. The evening included the Maine premiere of “Islands in the Wind,” Compass Light Production’s documentary about the Fox Islands Wind project completed on Vinalhaven Island in 2009.

Huber conducted his protest in front of the Island Institute’s building on Main Street.

Huber said the lobster industry is not against wind farms but is concerned about exclusive rights to the area where the turbines will be located. The loss of areas for lobstermen to place their traps will have a ripple effect of crowding other areas, he claims, and will lead to an increase in tangled gear.
