Litchfield may ban smaller wind power projects

Litchfield Town officials are considering a ban on any wind power project under 25 megawatts. RIght now New York State regulates any project over 25 megawatts, anything under, falls under the watch of whichever municipality it lies in.

The proposal comes from the town’s attorney out of Buffalo, Dan Spitzer. Litchfield Deputy Supervisor Kate Entwhistle says the ban will help maintain the natural wildlife and viewscapes of the town and ensure the safety of residents. “What we’re looking to do is have a law for small projects in our town. We don’t want them to spread,” says Entwhistle, “I personally don’t want them spread all over town, so we want to contain them.”

The Town Board was reviewing the proposal Tuesday night and will make any necessary changes. Entwhistle hopes to hold a public hearing on the matter sometime in October. After that the proposal will be brought to a public vote.

The entire proposal will be loaded to the town’s website sometime Wednesday.
