Legislation coming to permit meteorological towers in RDOS

By Steve Arstad - Keremeos Review, www.bclocalnews.com 9 August 2011

A bylaw to establish a definition of meteorological towers as well as permit the use of the same was given first and second readings by the regional district board last week.

RDOS legislation is currently silent on the topic of wind power, and in the absence of any regulations or direction, test towers are not considered as permitted.

The need for changes to the zoning bylaws with regard to meteorological towers is seen to arise from the need to investigate the possibility of future wind energy projects. The province has mandated the RDOS to consider climate change and clean renewable resources such as wind energy should be encouraged and accommodated. This bylaw is seen as accommodating the businesses that may be interested in developing wind power projects in the RDOS.
