Town Council rejects plans for wind farm

Report by Michael Coombes, Isle of Wight Radio, www.iwradio.co.uk 3 August 2011

Yarmouth Town Council has unanimously voted to reject plans for a wind farm.

The decision was made less than 24 hours after the Government’s Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change called on the Island to embrace green technology.

At a meeting last night (Tuesday) in Thorley members voted ‘no’ to plans for five wind turbines near Wellow and Thorley. They also believe the consultation on the plans, which ends this week, is far too short and needs to be extended.

Just hours prior to the town council meeting Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne had called on the Island to “get its act together and lead” on the green agenda.

However Yarmouth’s Mayor Steve Cowley said, “I think the Government should re-consider its position as far as land based turbines are concerned. We should be more concerned about the saving of electricity so that we don’t need to produce so much electricity. We all need to learn to save electricity and fuel.”
