State-owned power generator Mighty River Power has lodged resource consent applications for a 53-turbine windfarm on the Puketoi Range, 40km south of Dannevirke.
The project will be connected to the national grid.
The company’s general manager of development, Mark Trigg, said the wind resource in the area was of exceptional quality.
At full capacity, the windfarm could provide enough electricity to power the wider Tararua, Wairarapa and Manawatu regions.
The company has applied for consent to build a 61-turbine windfarm at Turitea, near Palmerston North. and is investigating a site at Cape Campbell in Marlborough.
