Group appeals wind turbine plan approval; Filing could delay special land use permit

Controversy over Consumers Energy’s planned wind farm for Riverton and Summit townships continues. The project may have hit a road block with the filing of a notice to the Mason County Zoning Board of Appeals appealing the Mason County Planning Commission’s decision earlier this month to approve their special land use permit application.

Citizens’ Alliance for Responsible Renewable Energy, a nonprofit organization, said today it is fighting to protect the health, safety and welfare of its members’ and neighbors’ homes in Mason County.

The Mason County Planning Commission approved the special land use application earlier this month with a number of conditional items that Consumers Energy would have to meet before receiving the permit.

County zoning regulations say the appeal of the decision stays proceedings, and a permit for the special land use cannot be issued to Consumers Energy while this appeal is pending.

Consumers Energy’s project plans call for 56 476-foot-tall wind turbines to be constructed in Riverton and Summit townships, with the goal of having the wind farm operational by the end of 2012.
