Resident considers wind farm for former mall

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, www.post-gazette.com 28 July 2011

NORTH VERSAILLES – Township resident Michael Novack last Thursday told township commissioners that he wants to put a wind farm on the former Eastland Mall property.

He asked for the commissioners’ approval of his plan before proceeding.

Mr. Novack said the owner of the site, Benderson Development Co., wants $4 million for the 58-acre property along East Pittsburgh-McKeesport Blvd.

He said placing windmills on the site would provide an economic boost for North Versailles and McKeesport.

Commissioner Ruth Grimes told him he will have to go through the process of gaining approval from the township planning commission and zoning hearing board for the plan.

• Commissioners split on a vote to use $100,000 in fire tax money to help pay off an old bond used to buy fire equipment. The motion passed in a 4-3 vote.

Commissioner Frank Bivins said the 0.5-mill fire tax raises about $180,000 per year. He said he and commissioners George Beswick and Sam Juliano voted against using the $100,000 in fire tax money toward the bond because it will not be available for the township’s three fire departments to use.

• Commissioners voted to award a contract for replacement of the municipal building roof to low bidder Likar Roofing of North Versailles for $39,735.

Ms. Grimes said the roof replacement will be done this year.
