THROOP – Decked out in one of the “activism T-shirts” he made himself, borough council President Thomas Lukasewicz again spread the word about the special town hall meeting the borough is holding next month at the Throop Civic Center.

At a borough council meeting Monday night, Mr. Luka-sewicz said that while “most politicians are going to side step” the meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, Kevin Murphy, D-113, Scranton, and Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty have confirmed their attendance.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss Marcellus Shale waste and landfill uses and the impact they may have on Lackawanna County and its residents. At the meeting, Mr. Lukasewicz said he plans to mail a letter to every resident of the borough making them aware of the meeting.

In other news:

n Council approved a motion in a 6-0 vote, with Councilman Neil Furiosi absent, to give Joyce Hatala, the borough grant writer, permission to apply for a Going Greener Grant intended for the 48 acres of land that the borough secured from the Department of Environmental Protection 15 years ago.

So far, plans for the site include a walking trail, biking trail, dog park and pavilion.

n Council also unanimously approved a motion to allow Robert Kalinoski, the borough street commissioner, permission to erect a tower, also in the 48 acres of land, to gather wind speed data. If the data reveals it to be possible, the borough plans on using wind power to create electricity for the site, as well as to power all electric street lights in the borough.

n A plaque was awarded to the Mid Valley High School girls basketball team by Stanley Lukowski, mayor of Throop, at Monday’s meeting in honor of its accomplishments during the 2010-2011 season.
