BY BOB LOGAN, www.ashtongazette.com 21 July 2011

FRANKLIN GROVE – Franklin Grove voters went to the polls last Tuesday for a rare opportunity to vote on the three to one margin the voters gave a resounding “yes” to the question “Shall the Franklin Grove Village Board adopt an ordinance banning Industrial Wind Energy Conversion Systems (Exceeding 100 kw (kilowatt) and/or 60 feet in height) within the village limits and within a radius of 1.5 miles surrounding the village limits?”

In an unusually high turnout for a single question public opinion poll nearly 27 percent of the registered voters in the 1.5 mile radius outside the village limits and 24 percent of the registered voters within the village turned out to vote 137 “yes” to 45 “no” on the issue. The numbers reflected that of the total 182 votes cast, 136 came from within the village and 46 were cast by voters living outside the village limits. No figures were measured for how each category voted.

Eligible voters outside the village limits included eleven from Ashton and Bradford Townships and the remainder came from Franklin Grove Township, residents both inside and outside the village limits.

Following a tally of the votes Tuesday night and certification by Village Clerk Lori Smith and Village President Bob Logan, the Franklin Grove Wind Energy Investigative Committee voted 3 – 0 with a quorum present to recommend to the village board that the board adopt a ban of industrial wind energy conversion systems in Franklin Grove and the surrounding 1.5 mile radius.

The board will consider follow-up action at its Aug. 8 regular meeting.
