Fears community to lose wind farm appeal avenue

Northern Areas Council chairman Ben Browne says he is concerned a wind farm company will use the Development Act to ensure the community can never appeal against its project.

Renewable energy investors Investec is in the early stages of seeking development approval for a wind farm, north of Jamestown.

Mr Browne says the company will still have to consult with the community but people should be given more say.

“Consulting is one thing, when the community loses its rights, that’s the main concern for me,” he said.

“I think a lot of the community support wind farms and therefore I think it will build opposition even from people that actually in principle support them, but they don’t support the idea of the community losing its right.”
