Selectmen consider visit to turbine sites

FALMOUTH – Falmouth selectmen are considering an official site visit to the town’s controversial wind turbines even as they ponder what to do about the situation.

Selectmen Chairwoman Mary Pat Flynn asked colleagues Monday night to consider visiting the turbines as a board, which would require 48-hour public notice similar to other board meetings.

“I’m just asking you to think about the feasibility of it,” Flynn said.

There was no vote on the matter but selectmen discussed visiting the turbines after they receive details on various mitigation scenarios from their consultant. That information is expected in the coming weeks.

There was also no discussion of an itinerary but the area has the municipally owned Wind 1 and Wind 2 turbines at the Falmouth Wastewater Treatment Facility and the privately owned Notus/Webb turbine in the Falmouth Technology Park. Wind 1 has caused the lion’s share of complaints but neighbors have also voiced concerns about the Notus/Webb turbine. Wind 2 is not yet operational but could come online as soon as the fall.

Flynn recently attended the annual meeting of the West Falmouth Village Association and discussed the possible visit during a question-and-answer period. She said she told association members that she had visited the turbines a long time ago but that another visit could be a good idea.

Malcolm Donald, a resident, said roughly 40 people attended the association meeting and that several people spoke against the turbines while no one spoke in favor of them.
