DOD approves request for wind turbines near Rush, Colorado

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – The Department of Defense has approved a request for 50 wind turbines in the city of Rush, each with a reported height of 495 feet.

Rodney Hoover lives in the area, and tells KRDO Newschannel 13 that he was approached several years ago by a wind company that later built a “test tower” on his property. The tower has been testing the wind conditions on his land for about four years, he said.

Hoover said the company discussed potentially building 20 to 25 wind turbines on his property in the future.

“I don’t know what the neighbors will think, some of them may not like it but I don’t think they’re that ugly,” said Hoover on the potential for towers on his land.

The area where Hoover lives is ideal for wind farming, he said, because it is “in the hill area. It is kind of a high spot. There is less obstruction an the wind does blow from every direction out here!”

Paul Redner, president of the Three County Community Coalition, said there is another wind farm project being propelled by Clipper Windpower, LLC. This project will involve 100 turbines from Calhan to Fountain.

“They’ve already got leases from homeowners for the wind towers themselves, now they’re in the process of acquiring transmission routes,” said Redner.

Redner is concerned that the long term consequences of building wind turbines and power lines will be adverse, especially as it concerns property value.

While there are proposed plans and preliminary blueprints, a concrete time frame for either projects has yet to be made public.
