Geneseo wind turbine’s generator to be replaced

The generator in Geneseo’s wind turbine No. 2 will be replaced.

“A piece of plastic came loose on the inside, and (turbine manufacturer) Vensys didn’t want us running it like that, and I agreed,” said Lewis Opsal, the city’s electric superintendent.

The wind turbine is under warranty, and a new generator will be shipped from Vensys’ location in Germany. Opsal said he expected the wind turbine to be operational again by mid-August.

“It’s still under warranty, so (the new parts) are 100 percent paid for,” he said. Vensys also has extended the city’s warranties on the towers. Each tower now has a five-year warranty.

“We’ve also been having heating issues in both towers when it’s 89 degrees outside or higher (and the turbines are at) full load. Vensys will look into that on both turbines,” said Opsal.

“You’re always going to have problems with wind turbines. They’re a big piece of mechanical equipment that take a lot of surges with the wind gusts,” he explained.
