DODGE CITY – The Ford County Commission took another step Wednesday toward making the Ironwood wind project a reality.
The commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit for a substation for the wind farm, which will be located south and east of Spearville.
Ironwood Wind Power, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Generation Services, will build and operate the project in conjunction with Westar Energy. Construction of the first phase is expected to begin later this year and end by December 2012.
Ironwood officials estimate the first phase of the wind farm will generate 167.9 megawatts of wind energy, and additional phases may produce up to 500 megawatts.
In other business, the commission accepted funding requests from the Ford County Extension office, the Dodge City Main Street program and the Dodge City/Ford County Development Corp.
Extension sought $185,000 for fiscal year 2012, according to information from the county. The Main Street program requested $5,000, and the Development Corp. requested $50,000.
The commission will consider those requests, plus requests from other nonprofits, when drafting a budget for next year.
