Colourful protest of turbines

It was quite a sight on County Road 91, with a protest parade made up of farm equipment, cars and trucks, all headed to a public meeting about wind power in Clearview township.

Traffic in the area was snarled for over an hour for the procession.

There was even a fly by of a helicopter and two or three airplanes protesting WPD’s plans for eight turbines, 150 feet tall. One of the turbines is less than two miles from the Collingwood airport runway.

Once the parade reached the meeting, some of the more than two hundred protestors went in to look at information displays on the proposed plan and the process involved.

Others stayed outside carrying signs reading, “Stop Now Lives Are At Stake” and “Say No To Wind Turbines”. One tractor even had a model of a wind turbine with a plane crashed into it.

The owner of Clearview Nurseries and member of the group, Preserve Clearview, Kevin Elwood, addressed the crowd outside the meeting, saying they haven’t been able to have their say and that’s not right. They want to be heard by the province, who has final say in this project.

The group is looking into legal action.

A petition was also circulated around the crowd that gathered in the Stayner Arena parking lot.

The evening was peaceful for the most part, although there was a booth set up outside by a group of people calling themselves “Friends Of Wind” and there were a couple protestors who got a little boisterous with one of the group’s members.
