Freedom town news: Moratorium ordinance on wind power development

On Tuesday July 12th there will be a public hearing for:

Moratorium Ordinance on Wind Power Development
Purchase of a new pumper/truck for the Freedom Volunteer Fire Department
Recall of C. Ronald Price
Recall for Clint Spaulding

The hearing will start at 7:O0 p.m. at the Dirigo Grange Hall

The Town Office will be closed on Tuesday July 26th due to the Municipal Referendum Election.

Voting will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Freedom Election Hall (Town Office Annex) on Tuesday July 26th.

On Monday June 20th, at the Selectmen’s meeting, the Selectmen accepted a petition that would allow for a town vote for a six month moratorium on wind energy developments from June 2nd until a new Wind Development Ordinance be written and adopted. One property has already been sold to Beaver Ridge Wind and more properties are being discussed.

Right now the town of Freedom is wide open to more unregulated wind turbines. The residents of Freedom need to have an ordinance put in place to regulate wind power. The residents of Freedom need some kind of protection with reasonable setbacks. The only setback for an industrial wind turbine today in Freedom is twenty feet from a property line due to the fact that the only ordinance that relates to any kind of construction is our building ordinance. This disregard for property rights would be unacceptable to everyone. The people should be given an opportunity to decide this issue.

Absentee Ballots will be allowed, and they can be picked up at the Town Office.

We have gone unprotected for too long and we need to pull together to show support for the right thing to be done
