Council fails to extend ordinance on wind turbine farms

The West Lafayette City Council failed to pass an ordinance to extend the special circumstance time given to non-operational wind farms Tuesday night.

Wind farms can get a special exception to change the type of energy conversion system they use and the allotted time to complete the project has been one year. This was believed not to be enough time and it was originally suggested the length of time be extended to three years. Although this was debated down to 18 months, the rule still remains at one year of allotted time.

Councilor Gerry Keen presented the ordinance saying he was against the extension on the basis that other systems were functional after a year, so 18 months was an unnecessary amount of time. The ordinance was failed by the council six to one.

An ordinance and a resolution involving investments in public firms were both passed unanimously. The resolution to update the investment policy passed on its first read through and will help put West Lafayette’s investment policy in compliance with the state’s statutes. The ordinance authorizing the investment of public funds in certificates of deposit pursuant were also passed on the first read through. The ordinance will offer more competitive options for deposits for the city of West Lafayette.

The last ordinance to be passed involved corrections to the West Lafayette City Code. The corrections mostly cleaned up any typos or confusion in the text and does not change the law or the code. This ordinance corrected the code to more accurately reflect the procedures currently used.
