You must take a stand

Rumford Falls Times, www.rumfordfallstimes.com 30 June 2011

A woman spoke to me about my last letter to the editor, disappointed that so many people do not take a stand on issues relating to their community even though they do so in private conversation. She said some will not even vote on the issues.

The recent Rumford wind turbine ordinance is a lesson in American politics illustrating what this woman was speaking about.

No matter what your or my position was on the wind ordinance, we can see that those who opposed the ordinance took a stand. They took every opportunity to present their views. They seemed better organized at meetings and were always in the newspaper with letters to the editor. They made certain that everyone knew what their stand was.

Those who supported the wind turbine ordinance did not seem as well organized. There did not seem to be as many supporters speaking publicly or as often. And, there were not as many letters to the editor.

As the Rumford wind turbine ordinance defeat illustrates, then, citizens can have an affect on their community if they stand up and present their views. But they must take a stand.
