Churchover vote against windfarms

Rugby Advertiser, www.rugbyadvertiser.co.uk 29 June 2011

Only one person voted in favour of windfarms at a packed meeting in Churchover.

Nearly 80 people filled Churchover Village Hall last week, to consider Scottish and Southern’s proposal to build an industrial wind power station.

This was in response to SSE’s statement that the the ‘majority of people at its exhibitions supported the plans’.

Lorne Smith, Chairman of ‘Against Subsidised Windfarms Around Rugby’ said: “ASWAR have been advised by other Action Groups from around the country that though developers try to portray themselves as listening to the public, in fact they use every public relations trick to try to disguise the truth that the public is increasingly turning against onshore windfarms and particularly in low-wind areas like the Midlands.”

He said ASWAR has repeatedly said that over 90% of the community are against SSE’s plans

Mr Smith added: “This meeting of 75 people, where only one person voted in favour, again shows up the scurrilous behaviour of Scottish and Southern PLC. They should rein in their PR press advisor.”

The meeting chaired by Parish Council chairman Denis Watson, listened to a measured presentation by local planning consultant Dr Chris Down, after which there was a 25 minute discussion before votes were taken.
