As wind project is reviewed, opponents of onshore wind speak out against it

LINCOLN, Maine – State regulators are in the midst of holding public hearings on a company’s plan to build a new wind project east of town.

“First Wind,” an energy company based in Boston, wants to place 27 wind turbines on the Bowers Mountain ridge line from Carroll Plantation to Kossuth Township.

‘First Wind’ says if approved and completed the project could generate about 70 megawatts of power and serve thousands of homes. The company also says a wind farm would lead to more economic development opportunities for the area.

Yet opponents of onshore wind say the costs outweigh the benefits. Members of the ‘Citizens Task Force on Wind Power’ are already worried about the impact the turbines would have on senary and the environment.

The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission is holding a public hearing at the Ella P. Burr Elementary School in Lincoln on June 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. to discuss the project. The commission is not expected to make a decision on the project until later this year.
