Hawaii PUC approves Sempra Generation wind project on Maui

Pacific Business News, www.bizjournals.com 16 June 2011

The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved a 20-year contract in which Maui Electric Co. will buy 21 megawatts of wind power from Sempra Generation’s Auwahi Wind project in southeastern Maui.

The project currently is being reviewed by federal agencies, Maui County and the state of Hawaii, according to a prepared statement from Hawaiian Electric Co., Maul Electric’s parent company. Pending approval, construction is slated to start in early 2012 and take about one year. It is expected to create approximately 150 construction jobs at its peak, as well as five full-time jobs at the completed facility.

When finished, Auahi Wind will be capable of generating enough electricity to power approximately 10,000 Maui homes, HECO said.
