Planners say no to wind turbines

By John Garvey, Reporter, www.newburytoday.co.uk 16 June 2011

Planners have voted overwhelmingly to reject proposals for wind turbines at Sheepdrove Organic Farm in Lambourn.
Feelings ran high at a meeting of West Berkshire Council’s western area planning committee last night (Wednesday), where the application was the only item on the agenda.
Committee chairman Paul Bryant (Con, Speen) twice intervened to prevent supporters of the application being heckled by members of the public.
Earlier, several opponents of the turbine project had demonstrated outside the council chamber, waving placards bearing slogans such as “Say no to wind turbines.”
Following 90 minutes of sometimes heated debate, the committee voted almost unanimously to reject the turbine plans.
The proposals, submitted by the Sheepdrove Wind Energy Project following years of consultation with the local community, independent experts and statutory bodies, involved one farmhouse turbine which would have been 17.75m in height at the rotor tip and one main turbine of 39.5m at the tip, both at Sheepdrove Organic Farm.
The farm covers 1,850 acres of chalk grassland and arable farmland on the Berkshire downs near Lambourn in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
