Legal stoush erupts over wind monitoring mast

ABC News, www.abc.net.au 10 June 2011

A group of mid-north South Australian residents has launched legal action against a wind farm developer and the Goyder Regional Council over a wind monitoring mast to be built near Burra.

The council gave permission in March for renewable energy company Roaring 40s to build the mast near Burra.

A group of residents who live near the site are appealing against the decision in the Environment, Resources and Development Court in Adelaide.

During a directions hearing yesterday, the group indicated the grounds of appeal included the tower’s impacts on the visual amenity, historic values and tourism potential of the area.

Resident Bob Lamb said the mast would interfere with existing land uses and its approval would effectively mean the development of a wind farm is inevitable.

The matter was set down for a four-day hearing in August, which will include a visit to the site.
