MALONE – Hollywood came to Malone on Wednesday as actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski dropped by to learn more about wind energy.
Damon, who starred in “Good Will Hunting,” “Saving Private Ryan” and numerous other films, and Krasinski, who plays Jim Halpert on NBC’s sitcom “The Office,” had lunch at Jon’s Restaurant with Malone Town Councilman John “Jack” Sullivan.
“Apparently, they’re doing research on wind power to do either a documentary or a film,” Mr. Sullivan said. “I didn’t know they were coming. A student – I believe she’s doing her doctorate work at NYU on wind Power – had been up here before to talk to me. From what I gather, they touched base with her. I’m pretty sure she referred to them as ‘friends interested in wind power.’ She never told me who they were. She just asked if I had an hour or so to talk to them.”
Mr. Sullivan said both actors were “very down to earth,” and pleasant to work with.
“They had a lot of good questions, and they were very receptive of the things I was telling them,” he said.
While the group was dining at Jon’s, it was a woman from an adjacent table that made Mr. Sullivan realize he was eating with celebrities.
“I didn’t really know who they were,” he said. “They had baseball caps on, and they were very casually dressed. But then a woman came over from another table and asked to take a picture with them.”
The woman, Katie Nason of Malone, said she was at the restaurant with her husband, Jerry, and her mother-in-law, Barbara Nason.
“The table behind us noticed him first,” she said. “My husband said to me, ‘I think there’s someone famous behind you.’ I turned around and saw Matt Damon. I think I stopped breathing.”
After taking several minutes to work up the nerve to approach the group discussing wind power, Ms. Nason, 25, said she asked Mr. Damon if she could get her picture taken with him.
“Matt introduced me to John,” she said. “I knew he was famous, but I couldn’t place him at first. When I realized who he was, I was like ‘Oh my God!’ I got a picture with both of them. They were both very sweet.”
Ms. Nason said her husband took the photo with her mother-in-law’s iPhone.
“I only talked to them for a few minutes,” she said. “I didn’t want to interrupt them. But it was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ve never met a celebrity before.”
Ms. Nason said she’s a “huge Matt Damon fan.”
“I like all three of the Borne movies, ‘Good Will Hunting,’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan,'” she said.
Mr. Sullivan said Mr. Damon and Mr. Krasinski then went to view the wind towers in nearby Chateaugay.
“I think they flew into Massena and rented a car,” he said. “I’m not sure how long they’re staying.”
