Time to protect our assets

L J Jenkins is absolutely right (Have Your Say, Post, May 30). Why didn’t any Welsh MPs speak up for the people of Wales against these massive wind turbines.
These massive turbines and pylons, let alone the roads that will have to built – are to take electricity to Shropshire to connect with the National Grid.
What ulterior motives are going on here? Shame on these Welsh MPs who did not support Glyn Davies. Do we trust anybody? It will cost £1.6 billion to build 800 turbines and extra for pylons, sub stations and roads. Last year they produced 20 per cent of their capacity and lay completely still for most of the freeze of December and January. If the people in England want wind turbines let them put them there.
Even from an economic point of view we should be protecting our countryside and shores, thus protecting tourism and agriculture, let along our culture.
Tourism has got off to a good start this year and is increasing all the time. It is estimated it could produce £1 billion more in a few years producing more jobs for the people of Wales.
If we are lucky we could soon be selling Welsh lamb to China – thus further supporting agriculture and jobs, ie supporting families and communities all over Wales. Our culture (artistry, poetry and film makers) also means a fantastic amount to us.
Recently former Plaid MP Adam Price, who is at the moment studying the economic challenges facing small nations like Wales, said: “Who knows that without our willing to be wrong we can never be right. That only by questioning what is can we imagine what can be and might be. That is in our originality we will find humanity’s greatest hope.”
The Japanese have already made a massive effort to increase solar power. We already have a firm in Wrexham.
Finally, if we give huge support to our engineers and scientists working on undersea turbines and have power in Pembrokeshire at the moment, using our huge tides and currents in the north, in the Menai Straits, who knows we might event ‘strike gold’. These scientists believe our coasts could power the whole of Wales and we could even become world leaders in tidal power. Now that would be a challenge!
