Opponents of wind energy push for changes

Opponents of large wind energy projects say they’re disappointed lawmakers have not done more to address concerns of neighbors of the projects including noise issues.

They say 20-bills aimed at addressing the problems went through the legislature this session. They all died except for one.

It calls for a comprehensive study of wind energy in Maine, the benefits and the problems. Opponents say it doesn’t go far enough. They support the minority report which also includes an increase in the distance that turbines can locate near homes.

“Maine can not afford to kick the can down the road another year while the wind industry, wrapping themselves in the good green intentions of Maine people, continue their assault on the mountains”, said Chris O’Neil who represents Friends of Maine’s Mountains.

Officials with the wind energy industry say they support the study, but they say sudden and drastic changes to the rules will drive businesses away.
