County concerned for wind energy future at sanctuary

UPPER NAPPAN – County council is hoping proposed wilderness area designation at the Chignecto Game Sanctuary would not affect potential wind energy developments in that part of the county.

Council voted at its June 1 meeting to send a letter to the provincial departments of natural resources and energy requesting that a corridor be available in the sanctuary for transmission of wind energy and also that the proposed Apple Head wilderness area be open to wind turbines.

Coun. Ernest Gilbert made the motion regarding the corridor, explaining that future wind developers in these areas should not be cut off by these protected areas.

“I understand once it becomes a wilderness area, you can’t put anything new up,” said Gilbert. “So I ask that we have permission to have a direct route.”

Coun. Gerald Read made the motion that the Apple Head wilderness area be open to future wind development.

“We’re all looking for green energy, and let’s not close the door on green energy in this area if it’s appropriate to put in there,” he said.
