Residents criticise power substation nod

ABC News, www.abc.net.au 24 May 2011

Residents at Elaine, south-east of Ballarat, say they are disappointed an electricity substation has been given approval.

The substation would service the proposed 64-turbine Mount Mercer wind farm.

The Moorabool council rejected the substation plan. However, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal recently overturned the council’s decision.

Angela Green trains horses on her property near the proposed site and says she is concerned about noise and possible health effects.

“Well of course we’re all concerned about the health effects and also as far as being an equestrian person, I do use the road to ride down quite frequently to the neighbouring bush and I don’t know how loud the proposed power station will be as far as frightening the horses,” he said.

She says the substation could attract more wind farm proposals.

“There is a strong discontent among some of the neighbourhood,” she said.

“A couple of the neighbours were not as concerned because I think they were under the belief that there was no money for the proposed wind farm and I just don’t think that they really had a lot of idea about the size of the power station that was proposed.”
