Plans for a new windfarm on the Dengie Peninsula near the Essex coast have now been approved.
Maldon Council had refused to allow the Middlewick windfarm to be built but this has been overturned by a government inspector.
It means nine new turbines will be built on the Dengie peninsula – providing power to 9,000 homes.
It’s the third windfarm to be approved in Essex recently, others were recently approved in Hockley Farm near Bradwell and at Earls Hall Farm near St Osyth.
Opponents to the plans from the S.I.E.G.E. group (Southminster Inhabitants Environmental Group Enterprise) claimed the turbines would be the height of a 40 storey building, wipe a fifth of the value off house prices and cause disruption while they were built.
But Paula Whitney from Colchester & North East Essex Friends of the Earth said “There was a misinformation campaign which was scaring people about the effects on their health. If Bradwell were to get a new nuclear power station then the cooling towers that would need would dwarf the wind farms.”
Cllr Penny Channer, Chairman of the Council’s Planning & Licensing Committee said: “Officers are currently studying the appeal decision and seeking advice in order that the Council has the full picture before deciding what course of action it may wish to take”.
