A senior policy adviser to Governor Chafee and his predecessor Donald Carcieri has left Rhode Island to work for a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying group for wind energy.

Christopher Long, who specialized in energy issues and helped oversee development of two offshore wind farms in Rhode Island, has joined the American Wind Energy Association as its manager of offshore wind and siting policy.

Long left the Chafee administration two weeks ago to start his new position, according to Michael Trainor, Chafee’s spokesman.

“We hate to lose him, but this is a very significant career opportunity for him,” Trainor said.

The governor’s office is interviewing candidates to replace Long.

In his new position, Long will work as AWEA’s lead staff member on offshore wind issues and will work with the Offshore Wind Development Coalition, a separate industry group that AWEA helped start. The coalition is led by Jim Lanard, a former executive with Deepwater Wind, the company planning to develop offshore wind farms in Rhode Island.
