Consumers Energy announces $2 million ‘Good Neighbor Fund

Consumers Energy today announced it would provide a $2 million Good Neighbor Fund as part of its proposed Lake Winds Energy Park, and it will be up to community leaders to determine how best to use the funds.

Lake Winds, planned as Consumers’ first wind energy development, would consist of 56 476-foot-tall wind turbines proposed for Riverton and Summit townships. It has been met with both support and passionate opposition within the project area.

“The fund is designed to provide resources to address possible issues qualifying residents may have who live in close proximity to a wind turbine in the project area,” the company stated in a news release issued to the Ludington Daily News this morning.

Consumers Energy Spokesman Dennis Marvin said creating a fund like this is not an uncommon practice within wind energy projects.

Marvin said the company has heard it’s a good neighbor in Mason County and hopes the fund will help the company be a better neighbor.
