LURC hears residents concerns of new wind project

A public hearing in Ellsworth gave Downeast residents the chance to voice their concerns about a proposed wind turbine project to the Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC).

Blue Sky East wants to construct 19 turbines that are expected to generate about 34 megawatts in Township 16. Eastbrook residents and other Mainers are worried that building turbines near their community will decrease the property value. Others think issues in other parts of Maine with wind farms should be resolved before starting new projects.

“There’s still issues to be settled in Mars Hill, Freedom, and Vinal Haven with complaints of noise, vibration, flicker, problems with property value, such as not being able to sell one’s home even at reduced rates,” Mike Desenzo, Friends of Lincoln Lakes, said.

LURC will hold another session for public testimony tomorrow night starting at 6 at the Ramada Inn in Ellsworth.
