We pay our taxes but don’t have the right to open our windows? We have been here 17 years and Wind I in Falmouth has been here 14 months, but it’s a privilege, not a right, to sleep through the night uninterrupted.
You see, I forgot.
I forgot that the town of Falmouth, in its haste toward green energy, didn’t do its due diligence and sacrificed the property owners living peaceably on Fire Tower and Blacksmith Shop roads. I was lulled into a happy ignorance because there is a moratorium on new projects for turbines, and the Cape Cod Commission has established regulations, so there is movement to save neighborhoods from industrial-size turbines. And thank you, God, to the board of selectmen, which established the 23-mile-an-hour shutoff rule. But I forgot that even with movement toward saving other communities from these offensive neighbors, we are still “collateral damage.”
I forgot that I no longer have a right to an uninterrupted night’s sleep or opened windows. Sacrificed for the “greater good.”
I write because, well, I thought maybe Cape Cod has forgotten, too. We are still here, sleepless under the turbines.
